Goldenrod is purported to have healing properties and has traditionally been used in natural medicine in several ways. The following are some of the primary methods of using goldenrod salve in a natural health and self care routine:

  • Wound Care – When made into a salve, goldenrod can be applied topically and is said to help speed up the healing process of minor wounds.

Goldenrod Infused Oil Ingredients:

Salve Ingredients:

  • 2 Tablespoons beeswax pellets
  • 1 cup infused goldenrod oil (we will be making this in the first part of the instructions)

Helpful Supplies

Instructions

To Make The Infused Oil:

  1. Add the goldenrod to a pint sized mason jar, so it is about halfway full.
  2. Pour in the avocado oil until the goldenrod is completely submerged. Cover the jar with a lid and keep it in a dark spot for a 2-4 weeks, shaking ever so often. When the oil is a golden brown or deep yellow color, strain out the goldenrod and the oil is ready to use.

Prep Tips

  • Yield – This recipe usually makes about four (2 ounce) tins.
  • Storage – Keep at room temperature, or in a cool dark place, away from any light or heat sources that may cause the salve to melt. It can stay good pretty much indefinitely, however, if you notice any signs of degradation, separation, or mold – discard and make a new batch.
  • Test First – When using this salve for the first time, I recommend doing a spot test on an inconspicuous area of the skin. I do this when I try any new beauty or skin product to make sure that it works for me.

Safety Tips

Goldenrod is generally considered safe and a very popular natural herbal remedy. However, like anything of this nature, it’s a good idea to be careful and research before you try something new.

Here are some things to consider when making and using this homemade salve:

  • Do Not Eat – Goldenrod is generally considered safe for most people when used topically. However, this salve is not intended to be ingested (eaten).
  • Allergy Warning – Do not use if you have a latex allergy, as there are some studies that show people who are allergic to latex may also be allergic to goldenrod.
  • Always consult a doctor before using goldenrod, especially if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking any medications.
